Ultimate BBQ Commercial
For this analysis, I watched this promo for the Food Network's Ultimate BBQ. I chose to view this particular piece on Belief.com because the Food Network is my mom's (being the Italian that she is) favorite TV station.
Throughout this commercial, there is a narrator who informs the viewer what the contest is about and what you can win if you enter. This is very important because without it, the viewer wouldn't know the purpose of the commercial.
The piece starts out with a hand which squirts a ketchup bottle on a tie-dyed orange backdrop. The ketchup that squirts out reveals food, people eating and BBQing. This is a really cool transition. The way that the ketchup squirts out is more like dye on a shirt than ketchup. This technique was probably used because BBQing is mostly a Summer event along with tie-dying t-shirts. Both of these events are mostly related to Summer which is perfect for this commercial.
The colors that were used are also quite fitting for the topic. There are mostly oranges, reds, and greens being used in the color palette. Each of these colors represent both Summer qualities and grilling foods. The next scene shows a deck being built in stages. It becomes more elaborate leading up to the words "Outdoor Kitchen." There are pictures of people grilling and eating on the deck with silhouettes of other people in the background. These silhouettes are there so that the viewer focuses on the real photograph people but still sees that there are a lot of people at the deck party.
After that, pieces of a deck and grill are spread around the words Ultimate BBQ Sweepstakes and the Food TV logo. The pieces are a similar color as the background so that the white and yellow letters stand out.
After that, a large pile of money (green in color of course) start to fill up the screen and the announcer talks about winning $75,000 to rebuild the winner's deck. The large amount of money helps the viewer to believe that $75,000 really IS a lot of money and that maybe they should try and win. The details of what the money is used for comes next in the animation. Here, the creators pan out of a deck that gets larger and larger as it comes closer to the camera. As it does, the deck becomes more elaborate and the people start to pop up. (Including the silhouette people.) Again, this lures the viewers into thinking, "I want an expensive and elegant deck like that. I should enter!" The color scheme is still constant throughout the whole piece. On the decks there are green umbrellas and orange people. In the background there is a gradient that runs from green on the bottom to orange on the top. Also, the hand with the ketchup bottle appears adding the red to the background.
The image people pop up in front of the screen holding delicious grilled food and big smiles. Then it cuts to the words Ultimate BBQ Sweepstakes with burgers, hot dogs and other grilled foods in decorative paths. Instead of using designs, the creators used food that would remind the viewer that food is the important thing in this network. It's creative and unique.
Lastly, the ketchup comes back and squirts over a background of silhouettes at a deck party and reveals the Food Network logo (and website). Which is important, especially for this ad, because you can sign up for the sweepstakes over the internet. The viewer can easily remember the directions when placed after the information and purpose of the commercial.
